conversaciones en espaol

2003-05-29

Sorry about that yesterday, I was a little cracked up on coffee.

The midterm went ok (I think).  Here's two conversation snippets from class:

Professor (in Spanish): "What language do you need to speak in Vienna?"

Class: Blank stare as the professor correctly pronounced the V as a B in Spanish.

Professor writes name of city on bored.  "Vienna, Vienna!".

Class: Blank Stares.

Student A timidly raises his hand.  (in Spanish) "One must speak Italian in Vienna".

Professor (in Spanish) "Nooo...."

Student C is practically jumping out of his seat, waving his hand and saying "ooh! ooh!"
(in Spanish) "One must speak Viennese in Vienna"

Professor, exasperated, calls on the French girl as she has not been subjected to the American public school system and most likely knows the answer.

Professor (in Spanish): "Is Maria a common name in Latin America?"

Middle aged mom returning to school after a long absence: "Si".

Professor (in Spanish): "Is Maria a common name in Tibet?"

Middle aged mom returning to school after a long absence: "Si".

Professor (in English): "No, Maria isn't a common name in Tibet"

Middle aged mom returning to school after a long absence, indignant: "How the hell am I supposed to  know that?".
