how far I've fallen

2002-12-03

I had my third tattoo removal session today.  Crazy man pointed out that I have bled through my shirt.  All this and I think I'm going to fail my Networks final.  The class is only graded on the final, so I'll have nothing to fall back on.  Here's some examples from the practice test.  It will likely mean more to you than it does to me.

Ethernet uses a special type of data format called frames. Which
of the following statements is true of Ethernet frames?
a. All Ethernet frames are 1518 bytes long.
b. All Ethernet frames contain preambles that mark the start of the
frame.
c. All Ethernet frames contain starting and ending delimiters.
d. All Ethernet frames contain CRC fields that store the source and
destination addresses.
e.  I hate this class and I don't give a flea's bottom about frames
Answer: b
- Your response: e (Incorrect)
Section: 1. Standards and Terminology
Choice b is correct. A frame is a package of information transmitted
as a signal unit. Ethernet frames are not uniform in length, they can
be between 64 to 1518 bytes long. Token Ring frames have beginning and
ending delimiters, Ethernet frames only have preambles that mark the
start of the frame. The CRC filed on an Ethernet frame stores error
checking and control information, not the source and destination
addresses.

Suppose the following situation exists:
Your company has two offices, one in Denver and one in Albuquerque.
Neither office has more than 25 workstations and all run Windows 95.
The head of the MIS department has learned that he can dramatically
reduce training and support costs by using only Microsoft products and
the NetBEUI protocol.
Required result:
Choose an appropriate WAN technology with suitable connectivity
devices to connect the Denver office to the Albuquerque office.
Optional desired results:
Provide support for NetBEUI.
Keep the cost to a minimum.
Proposed solution:
Use brouters and a T1 line.
Which results does the proposed solution produce?
a. The proposed solution produces the required result and produces
both of the optional desired results.
b. The proposed solution produces the required result and produces
only one of the optional desired results.
c. The proposed solution produces the required result but does not
produce any of the optional desired results.
d. The proposed solution does not produce the required result.
e.  I hate this class so much that I'd rather lick the inside of a garbage disposal than
have a single thought about something called a "brouter".

Answer: b
- Your response: e (Incorrect)
Section: 1. Standards and Terminology
Choice b is correct. NetBEUI is not routable and cannot be used with
standard routers. To connect two LANs that use NetBEUI you can use
either brouters or bridges with synchronous modems and data-grade
telephone lines. Although either a brouter or bridge would work with
NetBEUI, a bridge will be less expensive than a brouter. As long as
you are using only NetBEUI, you do not need the router functionality
of a brouter.
