trailer park of my dreams

2002-10-07

I think Leo put in more hours this weekend then I did all week. We drove around Grosse Pointe on Sunday to look at houses. I think GP is officially out of the running now, as the backyards of every house we could afford are the size of postage stamps.

During our eastside neighborhood cruise, Leo and I happened to drive down the street that marks the Grosse Pointe - Detroit border. On the GP side of the street, the houses were fairly average middle class houses. On the Detroit side, we could see the back of some incredibly decrepit houses, complete with dilapidated boat houses. The boat houses were all in different states of actually composting into the canal. It was quite a contrast.

We drove down that street until we hit the lake. The street curved around to the Detroit side. Right on the lake, at the northeastern most point of Detroit, is a trailer park. Not just any old trailer park, this one was a micro-step above a shanty town. There were 40 or so trailers there, the roads between them were all dirt. The park was set off enough from the ghetto by a park and a street, that it was a prime piece of property. Broken down cars and aluminum lean-to's demarcated each family's lot.

Impoverished as it was, it looked like a great place to live. I suppose that it isn't often that one can find urban waterfront property for folks in that income bracket. It was strangely pretty.
